CRITICAL LITERACY

REFLECTION UNIT 5

1. In unit 5 the most interesting part is we can learn on how to predict the audience or the person who will become as the intended audience. It is really interesting to know that the article that was been produce is stated for certain audience and what will happened if the article has been read by the unintended audience. It is also interesting to learn on how to predict the impact of the text on the audience. As a good writer, we must consider about the audience; which is the impact on the audience itself. All of these really make this unit become very interesting.

2. The concept and terminology of this unit is easy to understand and really interesting. However, there are certain things that quite confusing and a bit difficult to understand. From this unit, I found that it is not easy to predict who will be the readers of the text or magazine that had been produce. We must know how to judge the audience and consider the impact after they read the article, text and others. It is also difficult to make the reader to understand of one text and the impact that will happened must be like what we must predict before.

3. The article “Out of Puff” is about people who are smoking, it tells about the smoking experience of the smokers instead of the smokers experience, its also have the subtopic which are why smoke? , worth the weight, getting help and what smoking does?. All of the elements that needed to do the portfolio is appear after read this article. From this article we try to predict the audience of the article and the impact for the specialist audience and non specialist audience after they read this article. It is likely that when the smokers read this article they will know the effect of smoking.

4.Nadia, Syahida Suhana, and Farah Aida have presented units 5. After listening for the presentation I found that it easy to understand this unit and the topic of this unit, which is audience and impact. I’m really like this presentation because its really make me understand the topic and they are also gives an example on how to predict the audience and the impact that will happened to the audience. Overall, the presentation is very good.

REFLECTION UNIT 7

1.The information that I found interesting in unit 7 is about producing and evaluating critical writing. In this unit we learn on how to write the critical review in different format, which is in essay format and not as in previous unit that we use numbering. We are also learning on how to do critical comment and evaluate the article.

2.In this unit, I found that it is a bit difficult to make the critical evaluation because it is need to analyze the article critically. It is also because the format of critical easy to understand because all of the important items in this subject had been focuses on the previous unit.

3.Article dieting is quite easy to understand because that kind of article is familiar in many magazines and the topic is also familiar and interesting. It is also easy to understand on how to make critical review and critical evaluation of this article as the sample of critical review and evaluation for dieting had shown in the Critical Literacy: Study Guide.dieting article is also easy to understand because it have the subtopics and the subtopics clearly shown for whom the article is produced.

4. the presentation for this unit had been done by Wan Zahidah, Mariam Aishah and me; Amira Syafinaz. From the presentation I know on how to make a critical review in different format and critical evaluation. In the presentation also tell about how to make critical review for article dieting as the text is easy to understand because its provide the subtopic. The subtopics of the article are; are you overweight? ,myths of overweight, the demographics of dieting, the oprah effect, yo-yo dieting, bulimia and natural weight, the right treatment, diet pills, overweight vs. dieting: the health damage, depression and dieting, the bottom line, the bottom line, advice to the overweight, and a word to professional.

REFLECTION UNIT 8

1.In this unit the most interesting part is producing and evaluating critical writing. After learnt this unit we have produce our own critical review by reviewing the article by our own. After finished reviewing the article we give it to our friend to make the critical evaluation

2.It is quite difficult to make the critical evaluation towards our friends review because it is need a very complicated analyzes before make the comment. And we have to state the weaknesses of the review and stated if the review is perfect or complete.

3.In this unit we need to read the article ‘Drugs or guns”. The article is quite difficult to understand. It is make me difficult to make the critical review. However, after read the article for many times, I finally understand the article and try to make the critical review although its still quite difficult to do it.

4.Nurul Mardiana, Ili Izlin Hanim and Tun Amirah Athirah have done the presentation for unit 8. After listening for the presentation, its help me to understand on how to make a critical review and critical comment and help me to do my assignment. It is because they have stated on how to make the critical review in a new format and how to make the critical comment by using the critical guidelines box, which make my work become easier.

CRITICAL LITERACY

REFLECTION UNIT 4

1.The information that is interesting in this unit is learning about argument and evidence. From this unit I know that not all article or text includes argument and evidence. There are also some text that does not have the argument and evidence. Although it is quite tough to understand this unit, the information given makes this unit become more interesting.

2.The concepts and terminology that are difficult to understand in this unit are to know the argument or case being stated, the evidence that provided to support the argument and to find out whether the evidence supports the evidence or not. It is also quite difficult to understand reading 4.3 that is concerned about the issue of evidence and it is the same with reading 4.4, which is about the use and misuse of statistics and is intended to caution readers into a more informed response to text that link facts and figures.

3.In this unit I do read the article “burning out at nine”. In this article have all of the items needed to make a portfolio. However I am not really understand about the article and the critical elements. In this unit I also do the portfolio for assignment one and comment about the article from Time magazine, Briefing. In this article stated the argument and evidence. This article is also quite difficult to understand because the use of difficult word and the story is quite complicated.

4.Hazwani, Azila and Siti Farah Diana have done presentation for unit 4. I am still having the difficulties to understand about evidence and argument. However, the presentation helps me to understand it a little bit about the argument or case being stated in text, the evidence provided to support the argument and to know whether the evidence support the argument or not.

CRITICAL LITERACY

REFLECTION UNIT 3

1.The information that I found interesting in this unit is we learnt more about positioning. By learning this unit we know how the writer construct the participants in the text and how is the reader constructed? In this unit I also found that it helps to develop the ability to recognize and identify elements of positioning.

2.There are some concepts and terminology that is difficult to understand in this topic. It is quite difficult for me to know the way to construct the participant in the text and the way that the reader is constructed. It is also difficult to understand the terminology in reading 3.4, which are the term discourse, constructs, ideal reader and reading positions.

3. The article Truth about Youth is very interesting. I found that it is easy to find out all of the elements needed to do the portfolio task for this article. However, I quite confusing in the perspective and positioning part. It is because in the perspective part we must recognize that the article is to comment or condemn. In the positioning part we must know the way to construct the reader and the way the writer construct the participant. In this article I tried to read with the purpose to understand more about the article and focuses on the positioning part rather than reading in unit 1 and unit 2. Overall I found that all of the elements needed to make a portfolio which are topic, content, source, audience, the rhetorical function, purpose, perspectives, positioning, impact and visual literacy is easily to find whether there are some elements that’s are quite confusing.

4. After listen for the presentation from Thuraya, Yusafiza and Qursyia it helps me to understand more about this topic. They elaborate a little bit about positioning, which is the stance of the reader about the subject. The nation of positioning follows logically from the writer’s perspective. They also described the way participant constructed which is seems not to support and describe negatively. Construct the reader; the reader will easily have an effects when read the headline and see the picture of the article.

reflection

CRITICAL LITERACY
REFLECTION UNIT 2

1- In unit 2, we have do the portfolio task ‘Battling the bullies’ and learn about languages, perspective, ideology, text and textualities. The most interesting information in this unit is about text and textualities. It is because, we can learn about a society and meaning of one text in the society. For example the Dunhill advert. From this we can uncover the attitudes and think about their effect.

2- There is some difficult things in this unit. For example some word and terminology is quite difficult to understand. For example, paradigmatic, syntagmatic and semiotic. It is also difficult to understand about cultural myths. It also difficult to understand about textual analysis and textual production. In reading 2.2, it is difficult to understand how notions are connected to the choices made by the writer.

3- At the first time when reading ‘Battling the bullies’, I feel that the article is very interesting. It is a good article because the writer try to expose the bullies issue in front of the public. The issue that most of the public thinks that it is unimportant and just a small issue. Most of them do not realize that it is one of the dangerous issue, which can cause a very dangerous condition and traumatic to the victims.
At the second time while read the article, I realize that the writer have their own purpose to share this issue with the reader and I also find out that the article is not just for public but it has been specified to the group of people which are parents and teacher. I am also find out about the writer perspectives, positioning, visual literacy and many more.
Generally, there is not have much different between the two reading. However the second reading make me more understand about the article and the writer stance.

4- COMMENT ON PRESENTATION

After listening for the presentation from my classmate, Fatihah, Dalila, and Zalikha. I have understand about language, perspective and ideology even though for just a little bit. However for the ‘Text and textualities’ become easy to understand. During the presentation, they state the meaning of myths. Myths is a set of signs which implies extremely familiar and influential social structure thinking. The also give the meaning of some difficult terminology such as signifier, signified, paradigmatic, syntacmatic and others.
CRITICAL LITERACY
REFLECTION UNIT 1

1- In unit 1, the most interesting part is we can learn about people who produce the text, for whom and why. After learn all the things in this unit student will know that text is a product which is produce by someone, it is distributed for someone else and every text that have been produce have a particular purpose. This unit is also interesting because we need to think critically, it seems like we analyzing the text. For example, in this unit, we doing a portfolio task entitled ‘Convicted Killer back at work’. In this portfolio, we need to find out about the topic, content, source, audience, rhetorical function, purpose, perspective, positioning, impact and visual literacy all of this activity is very interesting and challenging.

2- It is very difficult to understand the concept of this unit; it is because critical literacy is a new subject for us and the subject is also quite tuff. We need to analyzing the text and to think critically. For example, we need to find out about the stance taken by the writer, the implication and the purpose of the article. It is also difficult to understand about factual writing, which is containing procedure, description, report, explanation and exposition. Overall, the concept, task and terminology in this unit are quite difficult to understand.

3. At the first time when I read ‘Convicted killer’ the article is very easy to understand and I’m just read it with no purpose. The article is just an ordinary article. However, while doing the portfolio task about the article, I need to read and understand about the article critically. Before this, I am just read the article just to find the information. Nevertheless, now my reading become more interesting because I need to know and find out many things such as, the audience, sources, perspective, purpose, positioning, visual literacy and others.
After finish reading 1.2 and reading 1.3, the differences between these two reading is, reading 1.2 is about stories and fact. Martin JR discovered the relationship between the function and form of different types of writing. On the other hand, reading 1.3 Fowler, Roger and Kress stated about how apparently benign texts can serve regulatory functions, which is can control and manipulate readers in their beliefs and actions.

4. After the presentation about unit 1 by Nabil, Rahmat and Anuar, I'm start to understand a little bit about critical literacy; the needs in critical literacy especially in unit 1.The presentation from my friends help me to know the things that I’m not really understand, for example the way to describe about positioning, perspective and visual literacy while doing portfolio task. It also helps me to understand about factual writing.
