CRITICAL LITERACY
REFLECTION UNIT 1

1- In unit 1, the most interesting part is we can learn about people who produce the text, for whom and why. After learn all the things in this unit student will know that text is a product which is produce by someone, it is distributed for someone else and every text that have been produce have a particular purpose. This unit is also interesting because we need to think critically, it seems like we analyzing the text. For example, in this unit, we doing a portfolio task entitled ‘Convicted Killer back at work’. In this portfolio, we need to find out about the topic, content, source, audience, rhetorical function, purpose, perspective, positioning, impact and visual literacy all of this activity is very interesting and challenging.

2- It is very difficult to understand the concept of this unit; it is because critical literacy is a new subject for us and the subject is also quite tuff. We need to analyzing the text and to think critically. For example, we need to find out about the stance taken by the writer, the implication and the purpose of the article. It is also difficult to understand about factual writing, which is containing procedure, description, report, explanation and exposition. Overall, the concept, task and terminology in this unit are quite difficult to understand.

3. At the first time when I read ‘Convicted killer’ the article is very easy to understand and I’m just read it with no purpose. The article is just an ordinary article. However, while doing the portfolio task about the article, I need to read and understand about the article critically. Before this, I am just read the article just to find the information. Nevertheless, now my reading become more interesting because I need to know and find out many things such as, the audience, sources, perspective, purpose, positioning, visual literacy and others.
After finish reading 1.2 and reading 1.3, the differences between these two reading is, reading 1.2 is about stories and fact. Martin JR discovered the relationship between the function and form of different types of writing. On the other hand, reading 1.3 Fowler, Roger and Kress stated about how apparently benign texts can serve regulatory functions, which is can control and manipulate readers in their beliefs and actions.

4. After the presentation about unit 1 by Nabil, Rahmat and Anuar, I'm start to understand a little bit about critical literacy; the needs in critical literacy especially in unit 1.The presentation from my friends help me to know the things that I’m not really understand, for example the way to describe about positioning, perspective and visual literacy while doing portfolio task. It also helps me to understand about factual writing.
